The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research - iDiv, is a hub for international biodiversity science with its central mission Detection: to promote theory-driven data-driven synthesis and theory as well the scientific foundation for management of the earth’s biodiversity.
The Synthesis Centre for Biodiversity Sciences - sDiv is the main instrument of iDiv to foster theoretical and synthetic thinking in biodiversity sciences by bringing together researchers from different projects and disciplines and creating conditions that will promote a creative process.
The research training group of young biodiversity researchers - yDiv, has been designed to educate a new generation of scientists in transdisciplinary biodiversity research.

Young Biodiversity Research Training Group - yDiv

The research training group of young biodiversity researchers, yDiv, has been designed to educate a new generation of scientists in transdisciplinary biodiversity research. The trans-disciplinarity of iDiv and the aim to bridge different levels (from theory to applied aspects of nature conservation) and investigation objects (single organisms, manipulated communities, ecosystems) with a diverse set of approaches (modelling, field experiments, molecular ecology) is a challenge and an opportunity, both for the PhD candidates and the supervisors.

An integrative graduate programme with a shared PhD mentoring programme allows for exchange between Leipzig, Halle and Jena, as well as between theoreticians and empiricists. To ensure intellectual exchange, the two supervisors of each PhD student belong to different research areas (e.g. Theory and Molecular Interaction Ecology) and the fellow should interact with both groups depending on the needs of the PhD project.

The Opening Symposium ‘Integrative Biodiversity Research – a young discipline under time pressure’ was held on April 19th 2013. International experts outlined the challenges for integrative biodiversity research in general and for a centre like iDiv in particular. You can find further information here.
