The main focus of this course is to introduce participants to LinkedIn and other social media channels.
Contents and structure:
Part 1: General introduction
- What social media channels are available?
- Group discussion of specific science communication channels participants are familiar with
- Why do people use social media?
- How is social media beneficial for science communication?
Part 2: Basics of LinkedIn
- How to post to LinkedIn
- What to post and why?
Part 3: Speed-dating with other channels
- Expand on benefits* of X (formerly known as Twitter)
- Expand on benefits of Instagram
- Expand on benefits of Facebook

Participants need no prior knowledge to participate; however, if they are already active on social media it would be great if they can consider some of the science communication channels that they enjoy and why.
Lecturers
Christine Coester has been working in the field of communications for over ten years, both as a science journalist for outlets such as the German press agency, Handelsblatt and Correctiv, and also for non-profits in strategic communication. She holds a Masters in Journalism and a Masters in Biodiversity.
Kati Kietzmann has been working as science communication officer at iDiv’s Media and Communications for five years. She holds a Masters in Translation and Conference Interpreting as well as a degree in Marketing Management.
